The Substantial Need for a New Shelter

To ensure that the West Suburban Humane Society (WSHS) can continue to provide care and support for homeless dogs and cats, the time has come to build a new animal shelter. The current shelter was retro-fitted from a single-family home and a boarding kennel over forty years ago and it is quite simply ... deteriorating. With a bit of ingenuity and a ton of passion we made this unique setup work for many years, but it can no longer sustain the tremendous growth we have experienced in the last decade nor can it provide space for the proper housing and socialization of the dogs and cats awaiting adoption.

The current shelter must be replaced. In preparation for this day we knew was coming -- years ago our Board of Directors made a strategic and fiscally responsible decision to acquire the two lots adjacent to the current shelter property. Our plan is to build the new shelter on these adjacent lots. This has two important advantages. First, we can continue operations while the new shelter is being built, and that means minimal impact to the animals. Second, we will remain in the community that we currently serve and where we have built many relationships. The total project cost for a new 8,300 square foot building and furnishings is $4,000,000. The great news is that we are ALMOST THERE! We need your help to make the new shelter a reality in 2020.
